Former Brazil women's soccer coach Oswaldo Alvarez died Monday at 63 after a battle with liver cancer.
Known as Vadao, he coached the Brazilian team at the 2015 and 2019 Women's World Cups. Brazil was eliminated in the round of 16 both times.
He initially took over coaching the national team in 2014, leading Brazil to Women's Copa America titles in 2014 and 2015, the 2015 Pan American Games gold medal and a fourth-place finish at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Posting a tribute Monday on Instagram, longtime team captain and six-time world player of the year Marta said Alvarez had "accomplished very successfully your mission on Earth."
